Wilson Butte Cave was originally excavated in 1959 -1960 and then again during 1988-89. During the years between the original excavations and the more recent one the site had been visited and compromised by many visitors and relic hunters. Because of this the top layers were greatly disturbed therefore the second period of excavation focused on the deep layers toward the rear of the cave. Although there was a report published about the early excavations the second provides a much better and more thorough summary and update. The report is by Ruth Gruhn who directed both excavations entitled New Investigations at Wilson Butte Cave, Occasional Papers of the Idaho Museum of Natural History Number 38, 2006.
