Module Description: In 1946, a proposal by physicist Walter Zinn to help solve the uranium shortage was approved by a top U. S. Military official. Zinn became the first director of Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago, dedicated to the development of nuclear reactors. His proposal was to build a reactor that would produce, or breed, plutonium, another atomic fuel, while generating electricity. His project had to wait a few years for civilian approval, but once it passed a team was assembled. These were some of the key men on the EBR-I project, a reactor that produced power while breeding plutonium.
