The caves probably attracted humans because they offer shelter from the weather. They are deep in the ground therefore there is shelter from the wind and sun in addition to rain and snow. Plus, on at least on occasion the depression was used as a natural trap for a heard of bison which were probably driven into the pit and then killed with spears or arrows. In the sheltered area of the caves, the animals were butchered and some roasted for consumption.
