The people who periodically visited the Shoup Shelters used them as a hunting base camp. There were hundreds of stone and bone tools recovered during the excavation of which about 140 were identifiable spear and arrow points. All of the other kinds of remains associated with a sheltered hunting camp also were present such as firehearths and hundreds of big game animal bones, many showing signs of butchering and cooking.
