Image of Corn Creek 7

Most of the length of the Salmon River downriver from Corn Creek flows through a steep-walled canyon and there are only a few accessible beaches suitable for camping. Plus there is no walking access up and down the river for long stretches. This fact is the reason the river and canyon are know as the River of No Return. When the Lewis and Clark Expedition inquired about descending the river on their way to the Pacific coast in 1811, the Shoshone of the Lemhi River told them that if they did, they would never return. In addition, Corn Creek itself flows into the river from the north at this location providing a route for people, bighorn sheep and other animals to move in and out of the canyon.
