Baker Caves are unique because they provide conclusive evidence about prehistoric winter survival on the Snake River Plain. Previously it was thought that people depended primarily upon stored foods stockpiled during the summer and fall. But Baker Caves document that big game hunting was probably a year round event. The sites also document that the bows and arrows of the time were sufficient weapons to dispatch numerous bison, especially if the bison were driven into a confined area against the lava flow, which may have happened at Baker Caves (photo used by permission of the Idaho National Laboratory and the Idaho Museum of Natural History).
