The sites are located southeast of the town of Challis at the foot of the Salmon River Mountains, about 3.5 miles away from a steep gorge through which flows the Salmon River. This area receives very little precipitation, experiences moderate temperatures, and supports various kinds of vegetation including sagebrush and salt brush.
