Image of Baker Caves 4

It was probably not the caves themselves that attracted a hunting party to the location during the 12th Century; but it was probably the fact that the caves provided convenient shelter near a bison kill site. It was the middle of winter when the group stayed there so shelter from the elements was probably important. The enclosure of Baker Cave I was even enhanced by constructing a Juniper log and lava rock wall to reduce the opening (photo used by permission of the Idaho National Laboratory and the Idaho Museum of Natural History).
