Image of Baker Caves 3

Baker Caves were used during the winter as camping shelters while hunting bison in the immediate area. Wherever the bison were killed they were skinned and partially butchered then the portions containing most of the meat (thighs, shoulders, etc.) were brought back to the caves for further butchering including smashing the long bones to extract bone marrow, a very nutritious part of big game. The remains of at least 17 bison were recovered during excavations including the bones of unborn fetal babies. This documents that the caves were used during winter because, like all big game, bison mate in the fall and give birth in the spring (photo used by permission of the Idaho National Laboratory and the Idaho Museum of Natural History).
