The Birch Creek Shelters are located at the base of the Beaverhead mountains at the juncture with the Birch Creek floodplain. These sheltered sites provided easy access to big game grazing on the plain (e.g., bison) as well as animals more commonly found in the foothills (e.g., bighorn sheep). Plus the shelters are within a few hundred yards of Birch Creek providing easy access to permanent water.
