Module Description: Under the religious leadership of the Rocky Mountain Mission, established by Father Jean Pierre DeSmet, the Mission of the Sacred Heart ministered to the Coeur d’Alene Indians in what is today northern Idaho. Each with their own talents, the men running this Catholic mission were recruited primarily from European countries. Italy in particular was undergoing a revolution around this time, and many Catholic clergymen were eager to leave the country’s unrest and find a calling in the American West. They were met largely with success in converting the native people of the region. Ultimately, by creating a bastion of Christianity, they inadvertently helped blaze a path to white settlement in the area.
