The earliest occupation is dated by radiocarbon assay to approximately 4500 years ago and the site has been regularly used ever since. It appears from the subsurface geology exposed during the excavations that the terrace supporting the archaeological site was actually the river bottom before 4500 years ago but then a significant earthquake occurred opening a linear fault in the bedrock. The river diverted slightly into the fault leaving the flat terrace high and dry and available for camping which continues today. Within that fault is Dagger Falls itself.
