Redfish Overhang was excavated in 1971 and 1972 under the supervision of B. Robert Butler and Joseph G. Gallagher of Idaho State University. The site was excavated because it was endangered by pending installation of a sewer line servicing the Redfish Lake visitor’s center. Results of the excavation and the subsequent analyses are reported in The Archaeology of the Sheepeater Battleground and Redfish Overhang Sites by Joseph G. Gallagher, Archaeological Report No. 5, U.S.D.A. Forest Service Intermountain Region, Ogden, Utah, 1979.
