Module Description: Father Nicolas Point and Father Charles Huet, under the direction of Father DeSmet, arrived in Coeur d’Alene Indian territory in 1842. Initially wanting to be close to the largest concentration of possible converts, they built the mission down by the St. Joe River. This initial location turned out not to be as suitable as hoped, and after scouting out a variety of other locations, a fertile hilltop location was chosen by Father Joset. The mission here proved to be both a success and a local landmark for 19th-century travelers. However, the mission gradually saw the encroachment of white settlers, and competition for resources elevated. When reservation boundaries were eventually defined, and the mission was not included within, it was forced to move again to remain with its converted Indian congregation.
