Image of Aviator's Chronology

The artifacts at the cave indicate that it was used sporadically within the last 1700 years. It is possible that earlier, more deeply buried archaeological deposits exist but they were not penetrated during the limited excavation. The arrowheads and pottery suggest that the Great Plains people probably visited the cave as the world’s climate was cooling leading to the Little Ice Age (AD 300 – 1300); and the Northern Shoshone began visiting the cave during the Little Ice Age and after (AD 1300 – 1850).
