Two rockshelters on the banks of the Salmon River near Shoup, Idaho were excavated in 1965 because they were endangered by road construction. The two shelters, designated Alpha and Beta Rockshelters, were excavated by a crew from Idaho State University supervised by Earl H. Swanson, Jr. A report documenting the excavation and analytical findings was published in 1966 entitled Birch Creek Papers No. 3, The Archaeology of the Shoup Rockshelters In Eastern Idaho, Occasional Papers of the Idaho State University Museum, Number 17, authored by Earl H. Swanson, Jr. and Paul G. Sneed.
