Module Description: In terms of producing electricity, it was known by scientists that the heat produced in a nuclear reaction could be used to generate electricity just as any other major heat source can heat water to steam for use to power a turbine and turn a generator. Yet, the team designing and building the first Experimental Breeder Reactor made history in many areas of science and technology including reactor design, breeding of fuel, innovative cooling methods, and testing the use of plutonium to generate power as they proved their theories. As a consequence of their groundbreaking efforts, the fission of the atom was used for peaceful and subsequently commercial purposes.
