Point and Huet
Both members of DeSmet’s 1841 missionary party, Father Point was the unofficial expedition artist as he documented scenes, events, and people encountered on the journey. After the establishment of St. Mary’s Mission in what is now Montana, Father Nicholas Point and Brother Charles Huet were selected by DeSmet in 1842 to found a new mission among the Coeur D’Alene Indians. Choosing a site along the St. Joe River, they established the first incarnation of the Sacred Heart Mission, with a crudely-built chapel made of bark and small settlement. On December 2, a cross was placed on the site, establishing the site as a place of worship. This mission, known as St. Joseph’s, was used only a few years before relocation due to destructive spring flooding.
