Bobcat cave is a partially collapsed lava tube in the Snake River Group basalt flow south of Big Southern Butte. Sagebrush dominates the vegetation cover of the basalt flow although occasional “parks” where soil has accumulated support numerous grasses and shrubs. It is interesting to note that on a couple of occasions early in the morning near the cave an elk herd was seen grazing in one of these “parks.” This herd frequents the area of the INL were they are observed and studied by biologists. Elk must have been in the region at the time of the use of the site (5000 years ago) because of the numerous elk antler tines that apparently used as ice picks.
