Key for Lanceolate Points

Lanceolate points range in shape from ovoid to deltoid with Shoulder Angles from 60º to 100º. A diagnostic attribute of many of the lanceolate types is the smoothly ground lateral edges of the base. This attribute is not included in the key, but when present, can be used to confirm or reconsider a classification.

Follow the steps below to accurately key lanceolate points.

    1. Fluted - Step 2
    2. Not fluted - Step 3
  2. Blade Width
    1. Greater than 30 mm or Base Width greater than 25 mm - Clovis
    2. Less than 30 mm or Base Width less than 25 mm - Folsom
  3. Base
    1. Markedly indented (greater than 1.5 mm) - McKean
    2. Not indented - Step 4
  4. Blade Width
    1. Less than 16.5 mm - Cottonwood Triangular
    2. Greater than 16.5 mm - Step 5
  5. Blade/Base Ratio
    1. Less than 1.75 - Birch Creek
    2. Greater than 1.75 - Step 6
  6. Shoulder Angle
    1. Greater than 78º - Haskett
    2. Less than 78º - Wahmuza Lanceolate
